The Violinist

A journalist’s curiosity over the story behind a virtuoso’s violin unearths the melodic tale of Fei and Kai, two children drawn close at the cusp of WWII through music while surviving the turbulent historical changes happening in Singapore. 

Fei is a young girl from an affluent family whose deepest concern is her upcoming violin recital. Kai enters her life as the adopted child of Ying Jie, Fei’s family servant. When Kai’s perfect pitch and musical talent are discovered, Fei and Kai develop a strong bond — as musicians, friends, and later, lovers. But the Japanese occupation separates them. The only thing that keeps Fei going is the unfinished sonata Kai promised they would play together upon his return. Torn apart by external circumstances, the violin that first brought them close keeps them bonded over the span of eight decades. 

The Violinist is a treat for the ears. Its recurring original theme music stands out even among the great classics, lingering far beyond the credits. It’s no surprise the film was awarded best original soundtrack at the Annecy Animation Film Festival, as well as the Cristal, the highest honour, for best feature film.
