Silenced Nights

One night, in a dark Manila alley, Andoy (Nico Antonio) witnesses the police executing a teenage boy. It’s a near-nightly occurrence with the ongoing anti-drug operations, and its dangers prompt Andoy to lay low. He quietly returns to his daily routine of fixing gadgets and taking on odd jobs until he crosses paths with the dead boy’s distraught mother, Marissa (Lotlot de Leon). Seeing her struggle to discover the truth, Andoy finds the courage to break his silence.

With an enthusiastic journalist (Ina Feleo) on their side, Andoy and Marissa attempt to trace the events of that bloody evening, determined to reclaim the boy’s innocence and hold his killers accountable. But brick walls keep appearing, thwarting the group’s best efforts. 

Award-winning filmmaker Lawrence Fajardo’s bleak drama gives an unapologetic glimpse into the sociopolitical realities and harsh experiences of the Filipino people. Shot on location in the Manila slum known as Happyland — derived from its original Visayan name “Hapiland”, which means “dump siteing ground” — the film takes a cinema verité approach to capture the raw authenticity of its setting.

As with many of his previous works, such as the buzzy 2024 Cinemalaya title The Hearing, Fajardo once again dissects social injustice to amplify the voices of the silenced.
