The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd

Featuring sizzling performances from Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (who entranced TIFF ’25 audiences in The Testament of Ann Lee) and Scoot McNairy (TIFF ’24’s Nightbitch), the latest from indie icon Tim Blake Nelson (TIFF ’09’s Leaves of Grass) is a psychologically rich tale exploring themes of crime and punishment, desperation and retribution — and the strange ways lonely hearts sometimes connect.

Karen (Seyfried) is a teacher who finds work at a maximum security prison. It’s there that she encounters Wilson (McNairy), an inmate whose arresting charisma and unexpected tenderness pierce the emotional armour Karen has cultivated over the course of her abusive marriage. The charge between the two is undeniable, leading Karen to risk everything for the possibility of Wilson’s freedom.

Set in Nelson’s home state of Oklahoma, The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd poses tough questions regarding American justice and the moral purpose of incarceration. The film is also the finest example yet of the writer-director-actor’s singular ability to follow troubled characters as they tumble headlong into unfathomable dilemmas. In Seyfried’s brilliant depiction, Karen brims with emotional complexity, while McNairy immerses himself in a demanding role, one that keeps us wondering how much we can ever really surmise about someone else’s inner life — and how we survey the limits of our own humanity.
