In Zou Jing’s assured debut, Cao Ruofan and Li Gengxi (Bi Gan’s Resurrection) portray a girl passed through three different families and identities under China’s one-child policy. Visually refined, this affecting coming-of-age drama explores resilience and self-determination.

Inspired by a news story and dedicated to director Zou Jing’s grandmother, whose rural upbringing, resilience, and untamed vitality are reflected in the film’s protagonist, A Girl Unknown follows a Chinese girl from age six to 18 as she moves through three different families, each giving her a new name and altered existence.

Growing up under China’s one-child policy, Wang Juan’s life changes after her father dies and her mother becomes pregnant by a new partner. She is uprooted from her rural home, sent to live with a childless couple in the city and expected to become their daughter. Beneath the apparent stability and comfort of this household, unresolved tensions gradually erode her fragile sense of belonging.

As she grows older, further ruptures force her into yet another new home and identity. Eventually, she finds work in a garment factory and begins the difficult process of defining herself on her own terms.

Structured in chapters, the film traces the emotional consequences of abandonment, displacement, and the pressure to conform. Each new name marks another family, an added burden, and a new stage in the protagonist’s search for belonging.

Zou’s assured debut pairs an expressive colour palette and meticulous attention to setting with a visual language attuned to Juan’s evolving inner world. Restrained performances by leads Cao Ruofan and Li Gengxi deepen this quiet, painful, yet ultimately hopeful coming-of-age story about identity, fortitude, and personal freedom.
