Light Pillar

In the seemingly endless winter of a future that feels both distant and near, a near-bankrupt Chinese film studio lies wrapped in a white, snowy grip — a ghostly vestige of the decline of traditional cinema as a form of entertainment. Once a bustling production facility, the compound — featuring replicas of the world’s most famous monuments, from the Forbidden City to the Great Sphinx — now stands eerily empty, suspended between memory and abandonment. 

Lao Zha (Da Peng), a lonely caretaker and one of the studio’s last remaining employees, tends to the decrepit facility alongside his only companions: a cat “actor,” who seems to have wandered in from a Miyazaki reverie, and a solitary little robot vacuum, gliding through the empty studio like a relic of domestic automation.

When the studio owner, unable to pay Lao Zha’s salary, gives him a virtual-reality headset instead, the weary worker retreats into a seductive digital world, where ordinary pleasures glow with revelation and romance takes the form of a beautiful player who draws him into the dream of interstellar travel.

Xu Zao’s remarkable debut feature is a melancholic, visually audacious meditation on alienation, technology, and the future of cinema. Collapsing the boundaries between animation and live action, reality and illusion, Light Pillar turns the familiar logic of cinematic escape inside out: Lao Zha’s “real” world is rendered in delicate hand-drawn animation, while the virtual realm appears in live action, more vivid and apparently more tangible than life itself. The result is formally daring and emotionally precise. A quietly immersive, visually subversive experience.
