A pop diva, kicked out of her own group's reunion tour and slapped with a community service court order, seizes the chance to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a major record label audition, only to push them too far, forcing her to confront her toxic industry — and her own streak of self-destruction.
From the TIFF programme
Rebel Wilson writes, directs, and stars in this story of a pop star who, following a downward spiral, finds a new sense of purpose by assembling a bunch of young up-and-comers to form a group of their own.
Thursday, September 17: This screening will be presented with open captions.
Rebel Wilson takes the lead — writing, directing, and starring — in this story of Tassie Young, a pop singer who leaves her hit band to attempt a solo career, until some ill-advised choices tank her ambitions. After a DUI, she finds herself paying for the consequences of her actions. Booked to do community service, she’s assigned to be the mentor for a handful of young girls who aspire to be in the spotlight themselves.
At first, there’s apprehension from all sides as the group struggles to find their voices and to establish a connection with their reluctant mentor. But as Tassie lets her guard down and gets to know each girl's story, the group starts to gel and even the jaded pop-star burnout begins to see new glimmers of light in her life. Tassie just might be the mentor she never had. Wilson assembles a hilarious cast of comedians and entertainers including Jennifer Coolidge, Randall Park, Nicole Scherzinger, Judi Love, and Sally Hawkins. True to the genre, the energized girl group is full of fresh faces, talent, and personality. With a fantastic soundtrack that includes classic earworms and original songs, this is at once an ode to some of our favourite pop acts and vibrant proof that the hits just keep on coming.
