When Mona Friedman is cast in a bit part at a small community theater, she transforms from a shy, unassuming housewife into a zealous method actor willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role—even if it means waging war against the show’s domineering director.
From the TIFF programme
Jesse Eisenberg directs Academy Award winner Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti in a dark comedy about a bored suburban housewife who finds purpose acting in community theatre.
Thursday, September 17: This screening will be presented with open captions.
Mona Friedman (Academy Award winner Julianne Moore) feels stuck in her tedious suburban housewife life. When a role with a community theatre company arises, she jumps at the chance to try out. To her surprise, she lands a spot in the production.
Hard-headed theatre director Jerry (Paul Giamatti, TIFF ’23’s The Holdovers) sees a spark in Mona and pushes her to test the limits of what she can bring to the role. Which she does, obsessing over nailing her first performance.
Writer-director Jesse Eisenberg mines rich, dark comedy from the self-seriousness of community theatre, with every line change and beat scrutinized despite the relatively low stakes for all involved, including the audience.
Moore is tremendous as Mona, mirroring the depth and devotion Mona gives to the character she is portraying. Brilliantly riffing on the Constantin Stanislavski chestnut that “there are no small parts, only small actors,” The Debut examines just what that maxim looks like when taken to the extreme.
Giamatti leads a supporting ensemble of stellar performances, including Eisenberg himself. The Debut is hilarious and smart from beginning to end with no false notes.
